Why is the latest Ubuntu the Resolute Trash-panda? I don’t know… but it’s just a name I guess? After updating I had to kill the process for the upgrade process then “apt upgrade” to make sure it finished… Other than that it seems a good release:

Big changes: Resources view

In previous versions the System Monitor would show cpu and memory and such in a way that wasn’t so useful for newer systems. If you have processes running GPU and NPU for AI processing and local LLM it would not be so useful. Now it is….

Some good things removed… from the default

Remember the power statistics that shows how long the battery fills and empties – along with estimated capacity? Well now you don’t, under 26.04. It’s an easy install to find “Gnome Power Statistics” under the App Center, searching “debian” packages, and install if if you want it:

Similarly, there is a new documents app rather than the Evince, which you can download again in the App Center. It seems there is minimal difference, some menus changed around and it no longer has the old zoom selector dropdown and Autoscroll. (Why do they keep aggressively simplifying these default apps?)

Conclusion

There are a number of other changes, which OMGUbuntu article and others have noted. The new apps apparently are more GTK4 than older GTK3 apps and there are varoius system updates – the one a developer might note is that the “sudo” now finally shows “**” while entering a password, and the new terminal app shows a different color (red) when you are root, and a different color while you are ssh to a different system. Overall, this has seemed more stable and not noticeably different for most tasks 🙂
