Pope Leo offers a counter point to worldly power

Yesterday marked a historic day, and even for those of use who are not Catholic, it’s interesting to consider what happened yesterday:

The new pope scheduled a large scale livestream and special message to Americans in Chicago – according to the New York Times, “Cardinal Blase J. Cupich said in an interview on Friday that the date was not chosen as a provocation to President Trump, whose policies he has criticized. (President Trump’s birthday is also Saturday.) But in his homily at the ballpark, Cardinal Cupich addressed the rights of immigrants directly, emphasizing the spiritual and practical connections between undocumented immigrants and the rest of the country.”

Other military historians have noted that it seems interesting that the 250th military anniversary parade also happened at the time that on the other side of the country, the president is overruling the local government to bring in the military to quel what he considers unrest in the protests.

The pope seems to be supporting certain values in a world that has forgotten many. It is somewhat comparative to St. Patrick’s famous stand on Mt Slain. When no fire was permitted across the country, he broke the darkness with a bonfire that same day – and got in some trouble for his counter-programming you might say.
