If you have tried TigerVPN recently you may have noticed nothing but connection errors… and visiting the website, you may have noticed the message…
end of service announcement
July 15, 2022
To our valued customers,
We regret to inform you, that we shut down our service on July 15, 2022 at 10:00 UTC.
We deeply regret this outcome but the last years have been challenging for us. COVID-19 had a big impact on our small team and we struggled to keep operations afloat.
On July 15, 2022 at 10:00 UTC, the service shuts down permanently and any remaining account data that was required to operate the service is deleted and irreversibly destroyed to respect your right to be forgotten.
This includes any data such as (usernames, system messages, login credentials, email addresses, support messages, etc)
We are sorry to shut down permanently.
Thanks for being with us from the start.
Replacement
With the permanent closure of Tigervpn, what are the alternatives?
ProtonVPN – The same makers of the well known encrypted email have an encrypted VPN service that you log in to with the same credentials. It has an app that enables more options and is easier than the network vpn dialog options. For the Linux app click here. One connection and limited vpn locations are in the fully functional free version, with “Proton unlimited” for between $7.99 and $11.99 a month which includes 500GB of storage and mail upgrades.
NordVPN – You have probably seen this advertised on Youtube or elsewhere. It costs between $3.29 and $13.99 per month depending on length of service and features, and is one of the more popular ones. (This referral link gives 1 year at discounted rate at $59)
Others… There are literally dozens of these, many of which offer a cheap “lifetime” subscription to vpn servers meant to keep data from prying eyes on your random untrusted wifi networks. Check out SF Deals (referral link), if you search for “VPN” you will find 52 options. Unfortunately, some of these may be lifetime for the lifetime of the company, as in the case of Tigervpn which I originally purchased on SF Deals 🙂
Build your own – Building your own server can be an educational and cost effective way to set it. I covered running Shadowsocks VPN in a howto, here.
