If you have been experimenting with the widely used OpenCV project, you may have found the StereoSGBM functionality that tries to find the difference between two images to find depth!
In a WIRED video here, they do a similar experiment to see how exactly this works in praying mantids. Interesting! They theorize that they use motion rather than actually seeing depth in a picture based on experiments.
And if you are at Humboldt Math Festival this coming weekend you can take a look at that OpenCV library used for stereovision and some other random and interesting mathematical demos! It’s not just for kids! 🙂
