If you have been following some of the news about RAM/chip shortage, and considering a new laptop, you may have been watching the news from Framework, and also the news from Purism..
FrameWork – new, but yet, not new?
The new FrameWork pro is announced with a few improvements, and swappability, upgradability with the previous models:
- 20 hrs of battery (vs, what, about 8 on the current model?)
- newer Intel cpu (it seems they switch this every year, AMD or Intel? make your choice, current AMD AI cpu or Intel…)
- Touch screen? Most developers don’t use it.
- Aluminum chassis and improved touchpad…

New Librem 16… or is it?
The Librem 16 is a new preorder… but is it? With DDR4 RAM installed on both the base and max version, this seems quite overpriced. DDR5 is supposed to offer reduced power use and higher speed! Why is a new laptop not using it?
In my experience from the Librem 5, these were overpriced compared to comparable units (like Pine64). But they do offer anti-interdiction service which seems like something certain journalists or other at risk groups might be interested in.
